sunny

about 10 days ago, we took in a very sick and half-starved kitten. i was doing a quick morning email check when i saw a notification from a local cat group i subscribe to. a man in oakhurst had found a kitten outside his apartment and was looking for someone to help. my heart broke when i saw the pictures he'd posted. i showed the post to staal. we both knew we had to do something. I made arrangements to pick up the kitten and we went to oakhurst and brought him home.
the first few days were very bumpy and there were times when it seemed like the little guy wasn't going to make it. each time he'd rally and come back a little stronger than before. we've been working to get him healthy and get some weight on him. every day he's a little better. i'm amazed at how far he's come in the short time he's been here.
mom named him sunny, because he's a little ray of sunshine. we all love him and hope that he will grow into a healthy, happy sun cat.

  1. Last night, sometime in the early morn, he curled up into my arm pit and fell asleep. We both, I think, felt very comfortable and laid like that for a long time. Then, sometime before dawn, he crawled up onto my stomach and fell asleep there. He was so still and quiet for so long (much like when we first brought him home) that I thought he might be dying—it's easy to have thoughts like that at 4 AM—and so I was loathe to disturb his peace. Finally, just before dawn he got up and headed, I presume, to the cat box. I decided to get up and make coffee. He eventually found me there in the kitchen and began screaming. Since it is Melina that provides his carefully metered meals (we fear he would eat til he exploded), I was confused and not a little worried, and I called to her. She arose, fed him, and things eventually quieted down. I took my coffee to the bedroom and slumped back into the chair by the bed. Exhausted by my lack of sleep and worry, I fell asleep. A little later, Melina brought him to me and laid him on my chest. Oh good, I thought, we can rest and recover together. But Melina had gathered her clothes and was headed to take a shower. Sunny observed this, quickly abandoned me and my chest and SCAMPERED across the room to follow her. He was thinking, most likely, that another meal was going to be prepared and wanted to be ready. I, on the other hand, was simply grateful to see him so animated and fell back asleep. Such are the ups and downs of raising a young kitten...
(love him, and worth every minute!)
